Alexander Johnson

"I left school at sixteen to do a two-year foundation course at Worthing Art College. I did a further three years BA Honours degree in Fine Art in Cardiff, specialising in printmaking and graduated in 1985. After my degree I moved to London for four years before moving to Barcelona in early 1989. In Spain I gave English lessons and continued to paint, then in 1991, I relocated to Nijmegen in Holland where I set up a studio for three years. I had a number of solo shows in Holland over this time, my work was figurative and overtly political taking inspiration from Basquiat and Keith Haring, commenting on the first Gulf war, homelessness and political extremism.

I returned to the UK in late 1994, spent a short period in London and then moved to Brighton. I exhibit regularly with online agencies, in commercial galleries and during the Open Studios in East Sussex in August. I am a full-time artist and have a purpose-built studio next to the house where I live in Laughton in the Sussex Weald. Currently the work is reflecting my recent move to a rural setting, which in turn has led me to reflect on my own childhood in the countryside in West Sussex in the 1960’s."
